Sunset

by Aislinn Pentecost-Farren

October 5-27, 2024

Sunset is a temporary outdoor art installation at Roebling Museum by artist in residence Aislinn Pentecost-Farren.

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the closing of the Roebling steel mill, Aislinn decorated the mill’s historic craneway with twenty-four satin banners. Red, orange and yellow fabric creates an abstract sunset design that stretches two hundred yards from the Museum’s gatehouse to Hornberger Avenue.

Sunset refers to the color gradient when steel is heated in a furnace, the closure of the Roebling Mill, and the dwindling of the fossil fuels the mill used for power. The length of each banner corresponds with the concentration of carbon in the atmosphere every three years from the time the mill opened in 1905 to its closure in 1974. Aislinn’s art attempts to reckon with the climate implications of America’s history while sustaining pride in industrial heritage.

The artwork is visible 24/7 from the streets outside the museum, and is also available for closer viewing in the millyard when the museum is open. You can meet the artist and learn more about the project at three events during October.

This project was made possible by a Burlington County Local Arts Grant

About the artist

Aislinn Pentecost-Farren is an artist, curator, and public historian.

She takes artifacts, buildings, and landscapes as the starting point for sculpture, ceramics, writing, and public events.

Her current projects attempt to reckon with the climate implications of America’s history while recognizing that industrial heritage sites have enduring value as examples of the innovation and united effort that are indispensable to solving the climate problem.

Over the past 10 years, Aislinn has led dozens of interdisciplinary projects. She works with communities to create collaborative, site-specific projects at historic places and parks, and she creates work for galleries. Her projects question the authority of cultural institutions, and uncover new meaning at overlooked heritage sites. Her work brings current environmental conditions into conversation with art, culture, and history.
